Reading
At St Bernadette, the focus of home learning in Reception is reading, reading is a vital skill and the children begin their phonics lessons and learning to read from their very first week in Reception. Therefore, we ask for your support in reading with your child at home as much as possible, this includes you reading to your child for pleasure and listening to your child read the phonics books we send home with your child.
Reading diaries
In Reception, towards the end of term 1 every child will be given a home reading diary. We ask that when you listen to your child read, please can you sign their reading diaries, this is to help us to support your child on their reading journey; you can make comments in their reading diary such as we read pages 1- 3 today, they found blending the word 'kick' difficult, they confused the p and t sound when reading and a comment of praise for your child. We then ask that you bring your child's reading diary into school everyday to enable Miss Shepherd (Class Teacher) and Miss Hale (Teaching Assistant) to sign and check your child's home reading progress. We will also write in your child's reading diary when they have read to an adult 1:1, in school.
