Welcome to Year 5

Welcome to Year 5!

In Year 5, it is our aim to ensure your child has access to a broad and balanced curriculum. We strive to give children the tools they need to tackle their year 6 SATs, secondary school and beyond!

Timetable:

The children are welcomed into school at 8:45 and the end of the day is at 3:25pm.

PE is on a Wednesday and Thursday. Please ensure your child comes to school wearing their PE kit.
To see what topics we will be covering, please see the curriculum overview page. We will also be putting up photographs so you can see what your child will be learning each term.

What will the children need in school?

Everyday each child should bring to school their book bag or a small bag containing their reading record and reading book. Books will be changed when your child has finished reading it. Please ensure your child reads to an adult every day when possible.

Each child should have a named water bottle and can bring a healthy fruit/plain biscuit as a snack for break time.

Daily reading:

We aim to read individually with the children as much as possible and all children read daily in class during class activities.

There is an expectation that children read to an adult at home at LEAST 3 times per week to help them with reading comprehension and learning across the curriculum. Parents need to sign their child’s diary so that adults in school know when children have read at home. This is an expectation for ALL children, regardless of reading level.

Children are given the opportunity to visit the library once a week.

Books are changed whenever your child has finished the one they are reading. In Year 5, children are expected to manage this independently.

Home Learning:

Home Learning is posted on the Year 5 Google Classroom weekly and spelling tests are completed the following Tuesday.

Doodle maths learning will also be set. It is beneficial if children could use this little and often - 10 minutes a day.

Maths tasks:

Additional learning: Children are encouraged to practise their Numeracy skills by completing a Daily Ten challenge.

Show and Tell:

We love hearing about all of the exciting things that do at home. Please post any pictures to the class stream on our Google Classroom and will share your news with the class.

Medication:

Children who have asthma will have access to their inhalers in class. Epipens will also be kept in class for those who need one.

All other medications will be kept in the school office and be administered by Miss Campbell.

School Rules:

Children are expected to follow our school rules and uniform code. Jewellery is not allowed, unless it is a religious item, which needs to be concealed underneath their t-shirt.

Nail polish, coloured hair and make-up are also not uniform. Children are allowed to wear earrings, as long as they are studs.

Please do not allow your child to bring in smart watches (that children can access games or outside communication), as this is a safeguarding concern and a distraction.

Please ensure ALL jumpers, cardigans and hoodies are named. This will ensure things are found easily if they get lost.
