Early Learning Goals
Understanding the Reception Early Learning Goals
A guide for parents and carers
What are the Early Learning Goals (ELGs)?
At the end of the Reception year, your child’s teacher will look at how your child is progressing across seven key areas of learning. These areas are part of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and help give a picture of your child’s learning progress and development.
There are 17 Early Learning Goals in total, and they cover the following areas:
1. Communication and Language
Listening and attention
Understanding
Speaking
2. Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Building confidence and independence
Understanding and managing feelings
Making relationships
3. Physical Development
Moving and handling
Health and self-care
4. Literacy
Reading
Writing
5. Mathematics
Numbers
Shape, space and measures
6. Understanding the World
People and communities
The world
Technology
7. Expressive Arts and Design
Exploring media and materials
Being imaginative
What is the purpose of the assessment?
The goal is not to label your child or give them a “score.” Instead, teachers use the assessment of the Early Learning Goals is designed to:
Help teachers understand your child’s individual strengths and areas for development.
Support a smooth transition into Year 1 by informing their next teacher.
Give you clear feedback about how your child is getting on.
This is not a test or an exam, teachers use what they have seen during everyday activities, play, and conversations. Most children will not be aware that they are being assessed.
How will I find out how my child is doing?
Twice a year you will be invited to attend Parents/Carers evening, the meetings take place in Autumn and Spring terms.
You will also receive a written report at the end of the Reception year (Summer term) which will include:
Whether your child is meeting the expected level of development.
If they are working towards the goals and may need extra support.
This helps ensure every child gets the best possible start as they move into Key Stage 1.
